RON SONEDECKER

CINEMATOGRAPHER – WRITER – DIRECTOR

ABOUT ME

Hey — I’m Ron

I’m a filmmaker, writer, and director based in Ohio, and a proud U.S. Air Force veteran. Filmmaking wasn’t a natural next step after my military service, but it quickly became a necessary one. I needed a way to connect, process, and express what I’d experienced, and storytelling offered that honest, emotional outlet. I’m currently studying film at Kent State University, focusing on both narrative and documentary work. Whether I’m crafting scripted drama or capturing real-life stories, my goal is always the same: to tell authentic, human stories that often go untold.

My short film TORN was my first real attempt at putting something deeply personal on screen, and it resonated more than I ever expected. TORN earned several honors, including Best Microfilm at the Vegas Movie Awards, Best Student Director (Male) and Best Microfilm at the Independent Shorts Awards, Best Score at the SoCal Film Awards, as well as Best Student Film and Best Indie Short at the Independent Shorts Awards. Those awards gave me the confidence to dive deeper into vulnerable storytelling. Since then, I’ve completed several projects like Stolen Valor, a short film exploring grief and redemption, and Stand/Down, a documentary about Arizona’s homeless veteran “StandDown” event…and many other narrative and documentary shorts.

Right now, I’m focused on writing a screenplay entitled Broken Silence, a dramatic feature-length film that explores how hidden truths and past choices ripple across generations. The story follows a fractured family brought back together under extraordinary circumstances, where long-buried secrets are forced into the open. Through moments of conflict, vulnerability, and reconciliation, Broken Silence examines how silence can both protect and destroy—and how finding the courage to speak the truth can ultimately lead to healing.

I’m not drawn to polished, perfect people or stories. I want to tell the raw, real ones — characters who are struggling, growing, and searching for meaning. Film is one of the last places where we can slow down and truly feel something, even when it’s uncomfortable. I look forward to collaborating with others who value honesty over gloss and aren’t afraid to ask the hard questions.
